A few years ago, I bought my husband a Remington ES-1000. It's time to replace it, doesn't hold a charge anymore and I'm searching for another one. I checked every site I can think of, and they've apparently discontinued this model. I bought him a foil electric shaver, but he hates it. Any suggestions for a replacement? Just want to add that the first one was bought after an email to this forum and your suggestion that he might like it.

Thanks for any help!

Sandy

Thanks for your note, Sandy. The only alternative I can think of now is a line of shavers by Wahl which you can see at http://consumer.wahl.com/section.cfm?sid=10   I hope this helps.

Hi,

I have been using an Arcitec 1050 daily for a bit over a year, and I'm still waiting for the replacement head symbol to appear. What trips this indicator on? The only thing I've noticed recently is that there is a sound as if some gear teeth are slipping momentarily, when I shave in a certain direction. Any ideas as to this sound? The shave is great without any pre shave prep., but becomes fantastic when I use Lectric Shave Ultra. Thanks.

Greg

You're welcome, Greg and thanks for your note.   Looking at the Philips Arcitec RQ1050 manual online at http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/r/rq1050_15/rq1050_15_dfu_eng.pdf  I can see that the recommended replacement interval is every two years.  Page 10 of the English language instructions page give more details.  I believe the shaver's circuit board keeps track of how often you shave and how long you shave to determine when the prompt appears.  I hope this helps.

Dear Mr. Steelbeard,

Great website!

I inherited my father's Norelco 5841 XL and generallylike the results, but the heads need to be replaced.

A friend suggested purchasing a head or blade sharpener, from $4.99 on E-Bay to around $20.00,Vollco. Are these gimmicks or do they work and work well? If you recommend, can you suggest a brand?Replacement heads are costly!

Thank you for your expertise.

Charlie A. in Vallejo Ca.

You're welcome and thanks for your not, Charlie.  Vollco is a sponsored link of the Electric Shaver Page and I've received favorable comments about their sharpeners.  My own experience with them have been mixed.  Of course, you can click on the Vollco banner on the left side of this page for more info from them.  I checked the Electric Razor Rap message board for any discussion about shaver sharpeners, but that discussion is several years old now as well as previous Tell Mr. Steel Beard postings.  My advice is if the combs look fine and are not dented and the cutters don't look too worn, you can see if the sharpeners will improve shaving perfomance.  If there is obvious damage to any of the combs or cutters, then they need to be replaced.  I hope this helps.

I have been using blades forever but I am sick and tired of their cost. I have resorted to the cheapest blades and they simply do not work.

So I am now in the market for an electric razor.

I do not want to spend a fortune on one (50 bucks or less); I just want one that will do a consistently good job. I do know that a rotary seems to be the best option. I am not sure about wet/dry options.

Any recommendations would be most appreciated. I would also like to know how long the electric blades last and how one preps for a good shave using an electric razor.

thank you.

John Suess

You're welcome, John and thanks for your note.  There are good middle of the line shavers available within your price range.  As you seem to be favoring a rotary shaver, I would suggest a Philips Norelco 7310XL which is available at Wal-Mart stores in your area after I checked their web site as to model availability in your city.  Of course, call the location in your area to make sure this model is in stock.  I've withheld the city you live in from this posting for privacy reasons.  You can see a leaflet for this shaver at http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/7/7310xl_17/7310xl_17_pss_aen.pdf  I hope this helps.

Almost 2 months ago, a part on my Braun Synchro malfunctioned. The blue switch on the shaver that raises the trimmer and lets you select a movable or locked cutter position got stuck; the shaver would not shut off so I just let it run until the battery died.

I tried fixing it with instructions from this website: http://www.fixya.com/support/t275506-braun_7526_shaver_switch. The instructions were very good, but the results were not so good. The switch refused to perform smoothly and got stuck yet again. Several additional repair attempts led to the same result.

I had had the exact same problem with a previous Synchro I owned so I decided I was not going to have it repaired, spend good money and chance having the same thing happen again.

It was the best thing (shaverwise) that ever happened to me.

I decided not to fix my Braun and instead, after some research, went on Amazon and bought a Panasonic Linear ES8043 wet/dry shaver. It was substantially less expensive than the Brauns I looked at.

"Wow" is all I can say.

I started out using it dry since that is what I am used to and it performed admirably in that regard. The motor runs full out until it needs to be recharged instead of slowly dying like the Braun used to do right before it needed a recharge.

Cleaning is a breeze - liquid soap and some water, followed by a rinse under running water - no more cleaning cartridges.

But wait - it gets better...

I tried using it wet with a little canned shave cream - now I am totally hooked on wet-shaving. It's comfortable and smooth like you cannot believe. I always had problems with stray neck hairs and this shaver has pretty much eliminated that problem. I still occasionally do have to make use of a blade razor to catch some strays, which I have always had to do, but not so much as with the Braun.

You can count me as one satisfied Panasonic customer!

Steve

Thanks for your note, Steve with your favorable comments on your Panasonic shaver.

Thanks for the blog. I read it regularly.

I have come up with a shaver that's totally new to me: It's labeled as GuardianEDGE on the front, and on the back is printed GER500, DC 3V 2W, charge 2 hrs.

Others in my family like this razor, and we need a power cord for it. Can you help?

David Peden

You're welcome, David and thanks for your note. I may have found the source.  Looking up Guardian Edge shavers, I found a trade directory which lists Guardian Technologies, a maker of small electrics and wellness appliances as the maker of Guardian Edge shavers.  The listing is at http://www.housewares.org/industry/search/mfr/detail.aspx?comuid=74313 which also gives the official web site as well as a toll-free number.  I hope this helps.

Dear Sir,

I have been blade shaving for many years, but recently had an accident (motorcycle crash) that will prevent me from using my right arm for some time. After cutting myself to a pulp trying to blade shave with my left hand, I pulled out my trusty old Remington XLR 930, cleaned and oiled it, let it charge and it fired great after setting in a drawer for many years – I am very impressed. It gave me a great shave, and now I cannot remember why I ever stopped using it.

Anyway, I tried searching the web, but I cannot find anything that indicates when it was manufactured – it does have a “311” stamped on the bottom, so I am thinking maybe November, 1993? Any idea when Remington was manufacturing the 931 series? Thank you.

Thank you for the great website as well.

Best,

doug

You're welcome, Doug and thanks for your note.  Looking through my old ads, I can say that Remington introduced the XLR line in 1977 when Sperry still owned the company.  That line got a big push after Victor Kiam bought Remington in 1979.  That line carried Remington for many, many years.  I hope this helps.

Hi,

I have a Norelco 985RX which I believe is about 15 years old or so.

Apparently I need a new battery and also some new blades as it doesn't perform very well anymore. I understand I can get replacement batteries for 10 bucks but if I tried to solder it in the shaver I would also have to replace the window in my house that I would throw it through during repair and that would be costly too. Do they make batteries hard to replace just to create a profit center for their industry???

I have been quoted $90 by a local shaver store to replace the battery($50) and heads($40). I took a look at Target the other day and saw a big selection of cordless shavers priced from $35-$220.

Is it worth putting money into the old one? Or if I bought a new one, how much would I need to spend to get something decent or comparable to what I have been accustomed to?

I am leaning toward new. Do you have a suggested model(s) . Not married to Norelco but would definitely want the triple header thing. In addition I would not want to mess with a charging stand as I assume there are still models where you just plug them into the wall when the battery is discharged like my old one.

Thank you for any feedback you would have.

Dennis L. Deppermann

Thanks for your note, Dennis.  Rechargeable batteries inside a shaver usually have a lifespan on average of five years before they need replacing.  As you know, soldering skills are required to replace the battery pack inside a shaver.  If the batteries inside your shaver are original, I commend you for making the battery pack last much longer than usual.  I tried replacing the battery pack myself, but a reassembly error led to my ruining the shaver's printed circuit board.  I guess the shaver companies did make batteries hard to replace to create a profit center.  Those who follow my postings may already know that I like corded only shavers but they are harder to find nowadays but they are still available if you know where to look.  Shavers have improved since you got your old Norelco 985RX and you can get a new middle of the line shaver which works much better than your old shaver and costs less than the repair price you were quoted.  One example is the Philips Norelco 7340XL shaver which uses the HQ8 heads, the same as the old Sensotec/Spectra lines which still gives me a satisfactory shave.  I hope this helps.

I have an old Philips Phillishave HQ5885 and can't find the users manual. I'm trying to work out why the word "learning" appears on the LCD display panel. Any info on where i can find a manual would be appreciated. I've tried Philips Australia, but they said the shaver was too old for them to store manuals.

Regards

Jason

Thanks for your note, Jason.  I couldn't find a user's manual either, but i did find a product brochure which explains that this shaver figures out from your personal shaving habits how many shaves you have left before it requires recharging.  You can read the brochure at http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/h/hq5890_33/hq5890_33_dfu_eng.pdf   The shaver is for the HQ5890 which is simliar to the HQ5885 except for the type of rechargeable batteries inside.  I hope this helps.

I have a Norelco model 6887XL shaver I purchased about eight years ago. Operationally its fine - but the battery is recharging less and less each time recently. I'd like to replace the battery if possible. I contacted Norelco and all they said was that I could find a repair store online and pay shipping - and for the cost I should just consider buying one of their new ones ( which I would have expected for an answer). Can you walk me through the replacement process?

Thanks for your note, Randy.  The complication with your Norelco 6887XL shaver is that it is a waterproof shaver requiring special skills to open the shaver and to seal it back up to keep the shaver waterproof.  If you don't mind losing the waterproofing, you can replace the battery pack inside the shaver, but it requires soldering skills and patience.  The replacement battery pack is available through several sources. The first source I found is at http://www.smallappliance.com/product.asp?pid=3215&cur=USD&sid=19012&mid=20&gid=19014&prdCls=P&pfor=7836&shopBy=Category   I hope this helps.

Hi,

I am trying to buy my husband an electric shaver for his birthday. He is in the military, so he has to shave often and he has a very thick, coarse beard which does grow quite quickly. He prefers something that he could use in and out of the shower if need be. I don't really care about the cost, I just want something that he would like and I really don't know much about this kind of stuff. Could you help me please?

Brittney

Thanks for your note, Brittney.  I'll give you two choices.  One is a Panasonic wet/dry model of which there are several different ones available.  Their Vortex and Pro Curve lines I've heard good things about.  The other is one of the Philips Norelco Moisturizing Shaving System models which have a built-in lotion dispenser  You may be able to find a discontinued Cool Skin model from Philips at a good price which also has the lotion dispenser.  But in either case, he can use it with his favorite shaving preparation, possibly a gel or foam.  Both are designed for use in the shower.  I hope this helps.

Dear Mr. Steelbeard,

I shave with the Philips HQ9090. i have done so for almost one and a half years. My shaving routine is in the morning, shower, then after about 1/2 hour powder face with baby talcum powder and shave. I used to have a really close shave but lately not so close. Thats not my main concern though. Since shaving for this last year or so, my beard area has gone green. The skin underneath looks green even if I get a close shave. Its really funny and embarassing. No one else has this except me. I wonder why. Its a medium to darker green. Is there anything one could do to resolve this. This would be really really apprecciated.

Secondly is this shaver ok to use as a wet shaver?

Thanking you and looking forward to your reply,

Anand D.

You're welcome, Anand and thanks for your note.  For the first question, I have a question.  How often do you clean your shaver?  The HQ9090 is easy to clean under a running faucet.  For the second question, the shaver is not intended to be used as a wet shaver.  It is waterproof for cleaning purposes only.  There is a PDF flyer for this shaver from Philips at http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/h/hq9090_22/hq9090_22_pss_aen.pdf   I hope this helps.

UPDATE:  Anand's reply: I would normally clean it once in 3-4weeks (for the past year and half), but have lately been cleaning a little bit more frequent. Why? does this have an effect on the greenness on the face? Also when you say clean it, in what way? Just running water through it under the faucet or?

MY NEW REPLY: After running water through it under the faucet, you can inspect the heads and cutters to see if there is any residue left.  If there is, you can remove it with a cotton swab.  You may need to dissassemble the head assembly to do this, but be sure you do not mix the heads and cutters.  I recommend doing this at one week intervals.

Thanks for your note, Bill.  I'm assuming you asked Remington about the nearest factory authorized service shop.  If they didn't help, I would hope a repair shop which has been around for a number of years and still has parts for older shaver models would help.  One of them I'm familiar with is St. Louis Shaver and Appliance.  They are at http://www.mrshaver.com so I suggest that you contact them asking if they can fix the shaver.  I hope this helps.

Hi Mr. Steel Beard!

1.

Why is the Philips shavers called "Philips HQnnnn" in Europe and "Philips Norelco nnnnXL" in U.S.A.?

2.

I have a great HQ8894 (8894XL) "James Bond" and now the "Replace Head" has started to show in the display again.

How do you clear the warning?

I have forgotten how to reset it but it was something like:

Hold the power button down for 30 seconds.

3.

Is there any difference except colors between the HQ9190 (9190XL) and HQ9199 (9199XL) "F1 Williams"?

I recently bought a 9190 but I would have preferred the nice carbon fiber look of the 9199.

Best regards

/Mats, Sweden

Thanks for your note, Mats.  Here are the answers:

1.  The Norelco name is only used in the United States.  The brand is Philips in the rest of the world.  The "Philips Norelco" branding is a transitional name as Philips is phasing out the Norelco name in favour of the Philips name.  Philips has already phased out the Philishave brand name on their shavers.  I believe the model number suffix is used on Norelco branded models to avoid misshipments of Norelco branded models outside the USA and Philips branded shaver models in the USA through the Philips distribution channels.

2.  Because I also have the HQ8894 "James Bond" shaver, I'll look at the manual.  It reads: "The symbol and the text will remain visible for 2 weeks to remind you that new shaving heads are necessary to guarantee optimal shaving results.  After 1 week the beeps will be audible for 5 seconds.  After 2 weeks the beeps will be audible for 10 seconds.  So it will shut off by itself.

3  The 9190 and the 9199 are functionally identical with only the styling differences and the extra accessories with the 9199 packaging.  I hope this helps.

Hi Mr. Steel Beard:

I have a Phillishave 6845 which works fine but whose battery is just about dead as it cannot hold charge even for half a shave…..I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and I would like to know:

1. Can my shaver’s 2 batteries which are soldered in place be replaced?

2. Who would do this battery replacement in Edmonton as not only special battery is needed but removal and replacement will require expertise and proper tools?

Thank you in anticipation of your help…..

Champak Mistry

You're welcome, Champak and thanks for your note.  Yes, the rechargeable battery pack can be replaced by those with soldering skills.  For question two, I went to the Philips Canada web site's support section for shavers which has an authorised service centre location finder.  Typing in Edmonton yielded the following:

7. DOROTHY'S APPLIANCE CENTRE

6930-104TH ST

EDMONTON, Alberta, T6H 2L7

780-436-8393

8. EDMONTON CONSUMER SERVICE

5224-99 STREET

EDMONTON, Alberta, T6E 3N7

780-434-6363

9. SASCO SMALL APPLIANCE SERVICE COMPANY LTD.

10546-115TH ST

EDMONTON, Alberta, T5H 3K6

780-425-9550

FYI, choices 1 through 6 were Canadian Tire locations.  While Canadian Tire does sell Philips shavers, I don't think they service them.  I hope this helps.

I'm 59yrs old and looking for a beard trimmer.

I've tried a Wahl, Conair and now have a Norelco, not real happy with any of them. I did a web search for Braun products and found their website, I like the product overview of the Exact Power 100 model. Braun has 4 models listed but all online stores state the products are unavailable, I can't findout why.

What happened to Braun and can you recommend another brand of beard trimmer?

Rudy Elicic

Thanks for your note, Rudy.  It looks as if the Exact Power 100 trimmer is available in parts of Asia and Europe, but it is not available currently in North America.  That explains why the web sites show they are not available.  If you go to the Braun web site and go to the North America section, you will see that it is not listed there either.  That product line may be available in the future.  You may want to contact Braun asking when they plan on marketing these trimmers in North America.  You didn't mention Remington.  They also sell beard trimmers.  I hope this helps.

Looking for Single Head Screen and cutter for electric shaver. Only markings on Shaver are Titanium Turbo and on other side is T2 - made in China. ad Shaver for a long time and have forgotten brand name. Belongs to my 99-yaer old father-in-law and hard to teach him features of new Shaver. Would appreciate: (1) Replacement screen & cutter, and (2) Brand name of Shaver.

Thanks for your note, Helen.  The Titanium Turbo and shavers like them are what I consider to be disposable shavers.  Replacement foils and cutters typically cost a lot more than the $10 I believe you paid for this shaver.  My advice is to get a replacement Titanium Turbo.  There are still several online shops which sell it and a URL which lists them is at http://www.google.com/products?q=%22titanium+turbo%22&btnG=Search+Products&price1=&price2=10.00&lnk=prsugg   I hope this helps.

I’ve seen two different cord only Philips shavers for sale, HQ8100 and HQ 9100. What is the difference between them? The specs. Read the same, unless I’m missing something.

Thanks.

Greg

You're welcome, Gregg and thanks for your note.  Both shavers use the same HQ9 Speed XL heads.  The HQ8100 is from the lower end Speed XL line and the HQ9100 is from the high end SmartTouch XL line which adds the following features which the Speed XL line does not have: The SmartTouch Contour-Following System which allows the entire head of the shaver as well as the individual shaving heads to move, enabling them to closely follow the curves of your face; and a unique Personal Comfort Control dial lets you set the floating shaving heads to the pressure that is exactly right for your skin and beard. Choose one of the settings the first time you shave with SmartTouch-XL, and you'll get an extremely close, safe shave with less friction and less skin irritation every time you use it. I hope this helps.

Hi,

Ok expert! I have a Philishave 925 shaver, and even the original owners manual. I need to travel to Europe.

I need to know if I can plug in the shaver into a 240V outlet to charge it up? Can I do this without damaging the unit? Is it designed to take 110-240V?

Nowhere in the owners manual does it tell you, and there are no markings on the shaver or cord that would give a clue. Please Help!

Frankie

Thanks for your note, Frankie.  An easy way is to open the head assembly on your HS925 shaver.  After cleaning out the whiskers in the whisker chamber, look for the voltage range.  On a model I have of similar voltage to yours, it reads "100-240V~".  If that is what your shaver states, it means your shaver does have automatic voltage adaptation.  So all you need for your shaver to work in Europe is the correct plug adapter.  I hope this helps.

Mr. Steelbeard:

Thank you for publishing concise and clear information. Your board is helpful and easy to read.

Many users of electric shavers prefer cord-only (not rechargeable) models. Would you please be good enough to list the advantages of cord-only shavers?

Are cord-only shavers inconvenient when traveling, especially internationally?

Thank you.

Al Paris

Thanks for your question, Allan.  The obvious advantage of a cord-only shaver is that they last much longer than rechargeable shavers which have to deal with the soldered-on battery packs giving out after an average of five years and the recharging bells and whistles which do not always work well after replacing the battery pack.  The cord-only shaver usually lasts a very long time as long as replacement parts are readily available.  The disadvantage has to do with travellers who shave on the go as some public restrooms don't have electric outlets at convenient locations in relation to the restroom mirrors.  I hope this helps.

I have a Norelco 6826XL which doesn’t hold a charge very long any more, so obviously I ordered a battery repair pack. Since I have soldered many projects and taught electronics merit badge for the Boy Scouts I thought I could knock this out and be back up and running quickly. After taking my shaver apart and lifting the joined end of the batteries I noticed that the metal strips are tack welded to the batteries and the metal tabs go under the battery holder to the circuit board. You wouldn’t happen to have any instructions on how to get to the circuit board so I can desolder the tabs?

Thanks,

Don Verner

Thanks for your note, Don.  The solder tabs are a part of the rechargeable battery pack.  Replacement battery packs for rechargeable appliances have tack welded solder tabs included.  What you do is unsolder the tabs from the circuit board.  I hope this helps.

I realised this was a problem because (over a period of time) after a recharge the time would only go up to about 94 minutes or so (it was about 118 minutes when new), although when it was down to zero it still worked fine. In fact I shaved for several days with it on zero, about 4 minutes each time. I'm aware that rechargeable batteries don't last for ever, but there does seem to be more life left than the display is showing.

I can only guess there is some design flaw in the way the display works out the time left, so how could I reset it so that it really does show zero when the battery is completely discharged?

best regards

Alastair

Thanks for your note Alastair.  There is a reason why the shaver still operates when the display reads "0."  This shaver uses lithium ion batteries.  Unlike other rechargable batteries, lithium ion batteries must not be allowed to completely drain or that will shorted the life of the batteries.  We had a pretty good discussion awhile back on the Electric Razor Rap message board on lithium ion batteries and that was the prevailing thought that they should never go dead.  I hope this helps.

Hi,

I have two Norelco electric razors that I would be happy to sell if anyone is looking for them. One is a Norelco Tripleheader with Pop-Up Trimmer type SC 8130; the other is a Norelco Tripleheader VIP type HP 1118. Both are in original cases and still work!

Thanks,

Joanne Garland

Thanks for your note, Joanne.  I suggest posting those shavers on eBay.

DEAR MR. STEELBEARD,

I HAVE AN OLD NORELCO HP 1328/E ELECTRICE SHAVER. I CAN NOT FIND ANY REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR IT. DO YOU KNOW IF THEY ARE STILL AVAILABLE AND WHERE TO FIND THEM? ANY INFO FROM YOU IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.

SINCERELY,

Thanks for your note, Stanley.  About the only items you can still get with reletant ease are replacement heads and battery packs.  I found one source at http://www.smallappliance.com/product.asp?cur=USD&sid=19012&gid=19014&mid=20&pid=7949&prdCls=P&shopBy=Category  I hope this helps.

Hi Mr. Steelbeard,

I am looking for a cord-only rotary shaver to replace my Norelco 4401LC, but I understand that Philips no longer markets cord-only shavers in the U.S. I would prefer to stick with Norelco, but don't want a model with rechargeable batteries. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks. Gerald Levy

Thanks for your question, Gerald.  You can turn to Canada where Philips of Canada still sells Philips (formerly Philishave) corded electric shavers. Outside the USA, Philips markets shavers under the Philips brand name.  The current Philips Norelco branding in the USA will allow Philips to phase out the Norelco name in the USA.  But back to your question.  I looked at two of my sponsored links and they both sell corded only Philips shavers and they ship to the USA.  The URLs which list the models are http://shavercentre.com/philips_hq8100.html and http://shavercentre.com/philips_hq6645.html for Mercury Shaver Centre and http://www.thebuyersclub.com/shav-elc.htm for The Buyer's Club.  I hope this helps.

DEAR MR. STEEL BEARD,

My husband is trying to locate an electrical circuit diagram for his Norelco 955RX razor as the capacitor may need replacing. Where can we locate that? Thanks for your help.

Eunice Wilkinson

Thanks for your note, Eunice.  Another posting from April 26 below shows that I was unable to find a manual, user or service, for this shaver or its sister HS955 model.  Typically, service manuals only list the power module and does not list specs for power module parts.  Power modules for older model shavers are hard to find now.  When a power module for an old shaver got fried because I goofed in trying to replace a rechargeable battery pack inside, one of my sponsored links offered to replace it for me, but he's having trouble finding the module and he is a factory authorized repair shop for the brand in question.  I'm sorry I couldn't help out further.

Hi.

I was recently scanning the web to see whether there was any information to help me open up the case of my "Braun exact 5 universal" beard trimmer, since I needed to replace the batteries. I didn't find anything useful (which doesn't mean that it is not there somewhere, of course), and your site seemed to be the most likely source for such information. So when I finally worked out how to get the case open, I took a photo of the clips that have to be removed, and thought I would send it to you in case you think it might be useful to others in the same position. I would be glad, though, if you did not put my email address on the site to avoid its getting into the hands of even more spammers than already have it. Thanks.

chris

P.S. The photo shows one clip still in place, and one removed (levered out with a small thin screwdriver)

Thanks for your note and the photo (which I can't show here), Chris.  There is an archived web site with service manuals of older Braun products at http://web.archive.org/web/20040807220754/63.230.9.155/braun/Srv_Man/ which may be useful to those who have Braun models linked to that URL.  Don't worry about your e-mail address as I make sure that these postings do not show too much info about the submitter.  Sometimes, I get requests from previous submitters who ask that their old messages be removed which I comply with.  Thanks again.

I have a Norelco 5885 XL that has a problem.

The screen was blank, wouldn’t take a charge, so I checked the batteries, one had some charge the other was dead.

I replaced the rechargeable batteries, had a display but it wouldn’t run.

I tried charging it for half a shift and checked the batteries again; they had gone from 1.9 VDC to 0.78 VDC. No charging going on.

Checking resistor R1 because it looked cooked, proved it to be a very high resistance. The color code reads, Orange, possibly grey, possibly black and gold (5% tolerance)

I flaked off a piece of the fried resistor and the shaver now has no display, and the resistor reads infinite—OPEN.

Q: What is the value of the resistor is question?

Q: Could something else, obviously, be wrong that caused the cooked resistor?

Q: Is this a common problem?

Thanks for any light you can shed on this dilemma.

Rich Sanders

Thanks for your note, Rich.  Unfortunately, the service manuals I'm familiar with only list the power modules and not the parts in the module.  Using the resistor guide at http://www.ealnet.com/m-eal/resistor/resistor.htm it shows, if my guess is correct, that the resistor's value is 38 ohms.  I don't know if the problem was with the resistor or if the problem originated elsewhere in the power module's circuitry. You could replace the resistor to see if that was the problem. You can also ask the shaver mavens at the Electric Razor Rap if they are familiar with this issue.  I hope this helps.

Hello,

Great web page which I just discovered today.

My question is regarding a Norelco Model 7885XL razor.

The batteries are going bad as it will not hold a charge after the first right hand section of the minutes LCD display is no longer dark.

Do you happen to know where I can find detailed directions on replacing the batteries? I have located a source for the batteries and I am experienced in soldering on printed circuit boards.

Many thanks for your time.

Regards,

Herb

Thanks for your question, Herb.  The shaver manuals usually include instructions on how to remove the rechargeable battery pack for proper disposal.  For your Norelco 7885XL, its manual (from the PDF I found online) indicates that the battery removal instructions are packed separately.  Fortunately, the manual also applies to the following models with the XL suffix: 7886, 7885, 6887, 6886 and 6885.  Some of those models were marketed outside the USA by Philips as Philishave models with the HQ prefix including HQ6885 and I found a PDF with the battery removal instructions on pages 10 and 11 at http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/h/hq6885_01/hq6885_01_dfu_eng.pdf  I hope this helps.

I know that back in 2003 you recommended the Remington ES-1000 Ultra Smooth Electric Razor for a commentor who was having problems with razor bumps. The one specific quality of this razor that you felt made it effective against that condition was it being a "slotted head" shaver. Well, as I'm sure you kow, that model has been discontinued, much to my chagrin as I begin my search for a good electric shaver. Now, my questions are:

Are there any other razors that you would recommend for those with issues of razor bumps?

Are slotted head shavers the only model of razor that you would recommend for those with this affliction?

What other models on the market today are slotted head?

I have one last question: Would a shaver of that type work as effectively on my head as it would on my face? I do keep my head cut very short using a Andis T-Outliner, but I am unsure of whether an electric shaver would be appropriated for my head.

Thank you.

Thanks for your help.

You're welcome and thanks for your note.  If you look down this page to the posting of  April 8 by Nick Pace, you'll see that there is one personal care appliance company which offers specialty shavers and clippers which deal with razor bumps which is Wahl.  The URL again is http://consumer.wahl.com/section.cfm?sid=10   True slotted head shavers are becoming hard to find as you may have noticed.  As for the Andis T-Outliner (which is described at http://www.andis.com/usa/productsPopUp.asp?Div=Professional&ID=04710 ), it does look similar to some of the trimmers in the aforementioned Wahl URL.  Andis does recommend using this trimmer for dry shaving, so you may want to try it to see if it gives satisfactory results.  I hope this helps.

Anyone have any suggestions for finding some, or as an alternative what product is close in performance but still unscented?

Thanks for your note, Jim.  I hope others can give suggestions as all I can suggest is to check the search engines and web sites like eBay to look for anyone who still offers it and, most of all, pass a note to Combe Inc. which makes Lectric Shave asking them to bring back the Unscented Lectric Shave.  Their URL is http://www.combe.com/contactus.shtml   I hope this helps.

I have a Norelco 955RX that was given to me by my Grandfather, so it has some sentimental family value and it has completely stopped working. I am a wet shaver myself, but I am considering starting to use this shaver if I can get it working again. However, I cannot find the owner’s manual anywhere online, including the Philips Norelco website. Do you have any idea where I can find info on why this won’t charge and where I could find a replacement manual? By the way, excellent site full of valuable information. Thanks!

Best Regards,

Charlie LeViseur

Thanks for your note, Charlie.  I can't find one either for that shaver or its equilvalent outside the USA, the Philishave HS955.  But I can tell you how the access the battery pack inside the shaver.  You'll need a Torx T-8 type screwdriver or a small screwdriver with a blade 3mm wide to loosen the screws.  The hidden screws are exposed when you open the sideburn trimmer.  The NiCad battery pack inside the shaver usually lasts an average of five years before they stop holding a charge.  Does this shaver work when you plug it in?  If it does, the battery pack can still hold a minimum charge.  If not, you will need to replace the battery pack.  Soldering skills are required to replace the battery pack as well as a lot of patience.  Most importantly, the battery pack must be fully discharged before you attempt to replace it.  I hope this helps.

Dear Mr. S.B.:

I'm into my second Remington ES-1000 now and it's working fine but I've just found out that Remington has discontinued this model altogether.

That's a real shame because my skin has been bump-free since switching to this razor on your wise recommendation and I'd hate to go back to the days where my neck regularly looked like the Pacific Rim Ring of Fire.

I contacted Remington today and they claim their Remington F-710 or F-720 Titanium series shavers are designed to deal with bumps and ingrown hairs but that they aren't intended to be the direct replacements for the ES-1000. It's hard to understand the justification for abandoning what had to be a profitable specialty line of razors (the ES-1000 was always the first choice for folks dealing with this problem) but I guess I don't comprehend high finance and corporate economics.

Have you tried either of these two razors? Are there others out there that would serve as a good substitute for the ES-1000?

Thanks...

Nick

Thanks for your note, Nick.  I'm sorry to say that I haven't tried any of those shavers.  I recall that Wahl has a line of grooming products targeted to ethnic populations prone to razor bumps.  The URL for that line is http://consumer.wahl.com/section.cfm?sid=10 and I hope one of these items is right for you.

Hi,

Can I plug my Phillishave HQ 6853 into 220 volt mains power to recharge the battery? I am visiting the UK next week for 3 weeks. I have mislaid the instruction manual.

Thanks

Peter Waterhouse

Thanks for your note, Peter.  There is a PDF on line of the instruction manual in question at http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/h/hq6853_16/hq6853_16_dfu_eng.pdf  The Philishave HQ6853 shaver has automatic voltage adaptation, just like the shaver in the note immediately below this one.  So all you need is the proper plug adapter for UK mains outlets, just like the note below.  I believe you're in Canada.  Radio Shack no longer does business in Canada.  If you're familiar with Radio Shack, they had a licencee in Canada which is now known as The Source by Circuit City.  I think I found the URL for the right adapter which they offer at http://tinyurl.com/2okddn but you may wish to go to a nearby Source location to confirm that it's the right adapter.  I hope this helps.

Hi,

I'm moving from the US to the UK for a few years, and taking my Norelco 8140XL with me. I know it says 'automatic worldwide voltage' but it only comes with a US 110V cord, and I can't find a UK-compatible cord anywhere online. (Not even in the UK section of the Phillips Norelco Accessories web site!) I don't want to arrive in the UK without a working shaver, and I don't want to get gouged by a local specialty store. Short of buying a voltage adapter, any suggestions? (I have to replace the heads on this shaver, anyway, so if I can't find a cord I'll just leave the shaver in the US and buy a new UK-specific shaver.)

Thanks!

-Gregg

You're welcome, Gregg and thanks for your question.  As your shaver has automatic voltage adaptation, all you need is a plug adapter. Radio Shack offers plug adapters. The current link for the UK adapter is at http://tinyurl.com/2u8hdp  I hope this helps.

He wouldn't be able to take one apart to clean it. His beard is neither heavy nor light. I could use suggestions and price isn't an issue.

Jared

Thanks for your note, Jared.  The widely available shaver I can think of which requires the least maintenance is the Remington model HGX-1 CleanXchange.  This model you do not clean.  When the shaver indicates that the head cartridge is full, you replace the head cartridge.  Remington has more details about this model at http://www.remington-products.com/mensshavers/hgx-1.htm   I hope this helps.

Thanks,

Thanks for your note, Eugene.  That's a very good question.  I wanted to check out the alcohol content of the cleaning solution Philips Norelco has been offering in the USA which was the RC1776 razor cleaner, but Philips discontinued that product.  I've been wondering if dipping the foil in rubbing alcohol would harm it.  This seems like a question to ask the Electric Razor Rap shaver mavens at http://www.shavermeister.com   I hope this helps.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Excellent website, Mr. Steel Beard. I have been using for the past 10 years a Remington M-8221 Microscreen Intercept, the one made in Austria. I have been very happy with its performance, replacing cutters, foils and batteries as needed. Unfortunately, the motor recently died.

I could purchase a refurbished one for about $50 here in the U.S. However, as technology has probably marched on, I was wondering if you would recommend instead a newer model, perhaps from another brand, over the M-8221.

Many thanks,

Steve

Thanks for your note, Steve.  Shavers have advanced in the decade since you got your Intercept.  As for a Remington model which is getting attention lately, the CleanXchange is a reasonably price model in which when the whisker chamber is full, you just replace the head.  Remington recommends replacing the head monthly with the CleanXchange model.  Looking at Braun, the Pulsonic seems to be the favourite for their high end.  As for a more moderately priced Braun model, the Contour line seems to be good.  Of course I also suggest asking the shaver mavens at http://www.shavermeister.com for this input.  I hope this helps.

Thanks in Advance,

Girish

Thanks for your question Girish.  I looked up the service part and it is only available as part of a motor/drive assembly for 8100 series Philips shavers.  I found one shop which offers it at http://www.electricshaverstore.com/get_item_3612190_norelco-motor-drive-assembly-8100xl-series.htm  As this is a waterproof shaver, special care must be taken to ensure that the shaver remains watertight after reassembly.  My recommendation is to take the shaver to a Philips Norelco authorized repair shop.  You can call Philips DAP toll free in the USA at 800-243-3050 asking where the nearest authorized repair shop is.  I hope this helps.

I've dropped the razor and now it makes a strange noise. Since I've already purchased a new Norelco, I figure I have nothing to lose by experimenting on taking it apart and finding out why it is making the noise. Who knows...I might be able to fix it!

So thank you for your help in advance. While the new razor is "better" than the old razor, I have a fondness for this one from many years of using it.

Hi Mr. Steelbeard,

I recently discovered your interesting website. I've been a Norelco user for most of my adult life, but recently, someone gave me a Bell + Howell zx4 rotary shaver as a gift. It doesn't seem to shave as close as my Norelco 6423lc. Have you had any experience with Bell + Howell? How does it compare with Norelco? Thanks.

Thanks for your note, Gerald.  I haven't used this "as seen on TV" shaver myself, but from what I've been reading (and your comment reflects this) that the Bell + Howell isn't that great.  I've seen similar rotary knock-offs at dollar stores and those don't impress me.  Any shaver made by Philips and some Remington rotary models which don't have the Lift & Cut heads (because Philips, which makes Philips and Philips Norelco shavers, hold the patents on the Lift & Cut technology) do a better job than the bargain rotaries.

Mr Steelbeard,

I have a Norelco 8895XL razor, and have been wondering for a long time why I can only charge it to 60 mins. I even sent the handle back to the US and received the replacement charged to 103 mins. When I charged it here in Australia after it ran out - only 60 mins. I borrowed a 240-110v transformer and tried it - same result. However today, I made a breakthrough. I charged the razor under a packet of frozen peas, and it charged to 100mins! (I reasoned that it wasn't as warm in the USA.) I reckon the company that sold it to me must have done a similar thing over there anyway, (just to get me off their back) probably not with frozen peas though. Interesting, isn't it?

Alan Gent.

Thanks for your note, Alan.  That is interesting.  Because this same shaver was sold outside the USA under the Philishave name, I wonder why you didn't send the shaver to a Philips shaver repair shop in Australia.  They use the same parts.  If I recall correctly, this model is identical to the Philishave HQ8894 which I have and the Norelco 8894XL as confirmed by the PDF of your shaver's manual at http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/8/8895xl_43/8895xl_43_dfu_eng.pdf with the only obvious difference being a James Bond 007 logo on the 8895. I do have a tip about using this shaver, because this shaver uses lithium ion batteries which must not be run down completely, always recharge the shaver when the indicator reads "0" even if the shaver is still operating.  All the times I recharged my shaver here in Michigan (where the temperature is now 16 degrees Fahrenheit which is -9 degrees Celsius as I type this) the shaver always recharged at 100+ minutes.

Oh, mr. Steelhead,

I have 2 Norelco Razors, one a antique, another not so old. The not so old one is a Norelco 4401lc electric razor, I have broken the part under the head assembly, and it has the gears under it, and the head rotators through it. On this plate is listed the Norelco address, and the info in the razor. Motor, etc, also it has maybe a part number, 0125 3034.Do you know where I can purchase this part? Also you know where to get the schematic for it? And my 2nd one, the antique, is a North America Norelco Corp.,type Hp 1308. It was my first razor, and is now in pieces, I wondered if I could get a schematic for that somewhere. It was purchased somewhere around 1976. Any help would be great.

Thanks, Bill Bruce

You're welcome, Bill and thanks for your note.  My experience has been that parts for shavers which have been discontinued for more than ten years tend to be harder to find.  The HP1308 certainly falls in that area.  Your 4401LC should have an easier time in getting a replacement part.  Philips does publish service manuals for their shavers.  It wouldn't hurt to ask Philips DAP about obtaining service manuals for your 4401LC and HP1308 shavers.  The 0125 3034 number you gave me looks like a date code/serial number for your 4401LC shaver.  I think I can decipher that number as indicating that it was the 3,034th shaver manufactured on the 25th week of the year 2001.  I would think any Philips Norelco authorized repair center would have the part you need or can order it.  The toll free phone number for Philips Norelco in the USA is 1-800-243-3050 so you can ask where the nearest authorized repair shop is or if you can obtain the part directly from them.  As for the hard to find parts and possibly a parts diagram for your HP1308, I would suggest St. Louis Shaver which may help with hard to find parts for old shavers.  They are at http://www.mrshaver.com  I hope this helps.

Hi, I came across your web page the other day, and was very impressed with the helpful comments you gave to other readers so was hoping you could help me.

I have been using the same Braun Synchron Plus razor for the last 26 or so years, more or less continually. Over the last few days both the foil and the blade block have shown signs of damage and I am having trouble finding replacement parts (currently bidding on eBay!).

If I can't find any, then I guess I would need to start looking around for a new razor - this is where I would love some advice from you as I have no idea what is out there.

Some considerations from me:

- Purchase price: Really no object. If this is going to last me a long time, I don't really care how much it costs and would rather pay more to get top of line model that will last a long time

- On-going maintenance: I see that there is a trend to have cleaning units that require regular purchases of specialised cleaning fluids. I don't really want this, as (having lived without them for 1/4 century) I tend to view this as just me just providing an extra revenue stream for the company, and also means that if they stop making it I need to change razors again

- I don't want to be dependant on battary / charge. I don't mind rechargable, as long as there is a way to use it in plugged in mode in case charge has gone

- Never having had it, I don't particularly require option to shave wet (although, if available I may find I like it!)

I live in Germany - what would you recommend?

Thanks again for the helpful site!

Steve

You're welcome, Steve and thanks for your note.  With my cord/cordless shaver experience, I'll say that when the rechargeable batteries give out, the power I get using the cord/cordless shaver plugged in is less compared with using a fully charged shaver.  So I'll suggest a corded only mains shaver.  Because you're a long time Braun shaver user, I'll suggest the best corded only Braun model currently available which, in the English international Braun site, is the Smart Control 3 model 4815.  But when I looked at the German Braun web site, I noticed that Braun has a new generation of middle of the line shavers called the Series 5 and Series 3.  The best corded only model in those lines in Germany is the Series 5 model 510.  If the 4815 is still available in Germany, you may be able to get it at a closeout price.  I hope this helps.

Mr. Steel Beard,

I have Norelco model 7617X shaver whci was giving great service until yesterday, when all of a sudden it would not turn on. I opened it and the batteries were fully charged, then O found out that the little rubberized plastic part the goes between outside power switch and internal power switch on PC board was at an angel and was was not pushing on PC board power swich when external power switch was pushed. I straightened it out and shaver worked, after first use it stiooed again, same thing happen, the plastic part move. Is the plastic part glued to front rubber power switch to stop from moving? Or there is some trick to keeping it straight? Or do I need to buy new switch. Can I buy new switch from any where? How do I put it in?

Thanks for your question, Daya.  It looks as if you're not alone with a switch problem with Philips shavers.  I think you need a new switch.  Check out this submission from last month:

I have a Norelco 6826xl that his given me good service for a couple of years now. Just this morning the on button under the rubber pad seemed to disappear and I couldn't press it to turn it on. Do you know if this is something that can be repaired for less than the cost of a new one, or should I just toss it and go for a new one?

thanks,

Marc Adams

Thanks for your question, Marc. It depends on if the switch or the control panel behind the switch has gone bad. If it's just the switch, there's a good chance it can be repaired. If it's the control panel, it's time for a new shaver such as one of the 7100/7200 series Philips Norelco models (7140XL, 7180XL or 7240XL) which look like a good replacement for your old Norelco Quadra 6826XL. If there is a Philips Norelco authorized repair shop near you, you could ask them what the problem could be and whether it can be fixed at a reasonable price or if it's better to get a new one. I received your update about the problem being in the switch itself and you were able to make your own replacement part so the shaver works fine again. Thanks for the update as well. (end of pasted posting)

Mr. Adams updated me saying that he fashioned a replacement part himself using a wooden dowel and the shaver works fine now. I hope this answers your question.

Hi, Gary.

I just saw on ERR your post asking for a substitute formula for the Philips cleaning solution. Well, here we go: 1 cup distilled (demineralized) water (such as water used in electric cloth irons); 1 tablespoon mild all-purpose liquid detergent; 1 teaspoon glycerin (easy available in drugstores and pharmacies). I used this concoction several times on my Arcitec (and attracted upon me the wrath of certain members of ERR) with wonderful results, in no way inferior to Philips’ own formula. Should you wish add color and/or smell, you can just add blue food colorant and/or lemon essential oil.

I hope this helps.

Nicolas

Thanks for the tip, Nicolas.  I'll pass your message to Chris as well.

I haven't checked your site since 2000 when I used it to decide on a Philips 6885. I've noticed many improvements in the new razors especially around cleaning so I'm thinking of purchasing a replacement for my 6885. I remember you used to get tons of these questions but I really like what I see from Braun and would like to know the recommendations between the Pulsonic and Clean 360. Also, if there's a razor that is hands down the best please post.

Thanks again for your awesome site.

Victor

You're welcome, Victor and thanks for your note.  The Pulsonic has been getting great reviews but I should point out that it takes three weeks to a month to get your face accustomed to the new shaver.  There are several discussions about the Pulsonic such as at http://jimelliott.suddenlaunch2.com/index.cgi?board=talk&action=display&num=1189807849   I hope this helps.

Great site guys!

I’ve just received the Philips Arcitec for a Christmas gift and I love it! I’ve used a blade for the last 20 years because the blade was not close enough for my time in the military…I wish the technology were better years ago.

My question: I do have the self-cleaning unit with the Arcitec – is there any replacement to the HQ200 cleaning solution – using an alternate product or some home-made recipe that does not cost as much?

Again…great site. I appreciate the information from it.

Chris

Thanks for the question and the kind words, Chris. I looked up my notes as well as Electric Razor Rap postings and found no discussions about substitutes for the Philips cleaning solution. There are plenty of discussions about Braun's cleaning solution, but that is not the same.  So I started a new thread in the Electric Razor Rap message board asking if anyone has a recipe for a Philips cleaning machine substitute.  You can follow the thread at http://jimelliott.suddenlaunch2.com/index.cgi?board=talk&action=display&num=1199412863   I hope this helps.
